Paul Goble and Intercultural Communication

Paul Goble is a good example for discussion about the relevancy of IC in society. For North American Native Indian tribes in the Dakotas, such as the Sioux: Dakota, Nakota, Lakota, Sisseton, Wahpeton, and others, he is a point of contention despite what some might say. Is what lies at the center of the controversy is the fact that he was able to get the South Dakota State Art Museum to sign a contract for them to be legally bound to display his works for a certain length of time during the year and in return the museum was given a large collection of his works. But some people would argue that that is nothing compared to his direct profiteering from specific tribes in South Dakota by “selling their culture” due in large part from his works being copyrighted. Not only is Paul Goble an acclaimed artist, but he has also won national awards for recognition of the children’s books he has written; they too are based on the Sioux tribal culture as well.

"Whenever I hear people talking about 'liberal ideas,' I am always astounded that men should love to fool themselves with empty sounds. An idea should never be liberal; it must be vigorous, positive, and without loose ends so that it may fulfill its divine mission and be productive. The proper place for liberality is in the realm of the emotions."
-- Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832)
